New Healthy Ireland Coordinator for Galway County
|
My name is Adele Rankin, and I would like to introduce myself as the new Healthy Ireland Coordinator for Galway County.
My role is to further the Health and Wellbeing agenda for the county and to support local programs and initiatives currently being rolled out locally in support of a healthier Ireland. I look forward to working in collaboration with national and local community groups and organisations throughout the county to further this aim.
With the summer approaching we are currently looking to progress of the SunSmart Campaign, a national HSE initiative, aiming to raise awareness of sun protection and skin cancer prevention among the Irish population over the summer months.
The campaign looks to promote collaboration between community, voluntary and public sector agencies within your area to raise awareness and protect individuals from the sun and to lower the risk of skin cancer in Ireland. One aspect of the campaign is to ‘Know the UV index’ which can be checked via the online global SunSmart app to be aware of when the UV is at 3 or above. This application can help to ensure you are mindful of your exposure and staying safe by limiting exposure when the sun UV is at its strongest.
Men’s Health Week is set to launch from Monday June 10th - Sunday June 16th which promises to deliver an engaging week of events, headed by HSE West and brought to you by different agencies throughout the county.
Men’s Health events will be rolled out to promote awareness, prevention and education around improving boy’s and men’s health. You can avail of free and convenient health services and screenings throughout the week, to emphasise early detection and to avert or treat avoidable health problems.
If you would like to participate and support the week, please contact me on arankin@galwaycoco.ie. For further information please visit the following website https://www.mhfi.org/

New Local Authority Integration Team (LAIT)
|
Welcome to Galway County Council’s Local Authority Integration Team (LAIT).
You may be aware that local authorities throughout the country are setting up Integration Teams and we are delighted to let you know that Galway County Council’s team is now in place.
The primary role of the Local Authority Integration Team (LAIT) is to coordinate integration supports to:
International Protection Applicants those with Refugee, Subsidiary Protection or Permission to Remain, Programme Refugees, and Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (Ukrainians).
At the core of ‘integration’ is the opportunity to take part and feel pa rt of what happening in your community, county and at a national level.
As we all know, many organisations have been welcoming and supporting new arrivals for many years. We will work closely with local groups and organisations to ensure that we all make the best use of the supports and resources already in place.
We really look forward to meeting you in the coming months and if you would like to get in touch at any stage in between, please send an email to integration@galwaycoco.ie.

UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD AROUND US
|
|
|
Cé gur chaith John Kelly cuid mhór dá óige i lár na cathrach i mBaile Átha Cliath, bhí sé i gcónaí ag iarraidh filleadh ar a bhaile dúchais i mBaile Chláir na Gaillimhe.
"Bhí níos mó suim agam sa tuath agus sa nádúr," a deireann sé. "Bhí suim agam sna beithí agus sa talamh."
Tá eolas iontach ag John ar logainmneacha agus cad a ciallaíonn siad, atá caillte in aistriúcháin Bhéarla.
Mar shampla, cailleann Cnoc na Cathrach a bhrí nuair a aistrítear go Gaeilge é (Knocknacarra). Trína chumas iontach ar an nGaeilge agus ar logainmneacha, tá tuiscint iontach ag John ar an domhan thart orainn anseo in Iarthar na hÉireann.
Míle buíochas John as páirt a ghlacadh inár dtionscadal chun cainteoirí dúchais Ghaeltacht an Eachréidh a thaifead.
|
|
It is fascinating to spend an hour or two in the company of John Kelly, who lives in Cloon, just outside Claregalway.
John moved back to his family village after spending much of his early years in Dublin and has a great understanding of place names 'as Gaeilge'.
The names of places around us have signifcant meaning in Irish, but are mostly a meaningless jumble of letters when translated to English.
For example, Knocknacarra in Galway City means 'the Hill of the City' (Cnoc na Cathrach) in Irish, but the English name does not mean anything!
John became the tenth person from Gaeltacht An Eachréidh to be interviewed by Alanagh Ní Chonghaile Ní Ghríofa and Ciarán Tierney yesterday as part of our project to interview the native speakers of this unique Gaeltacht to the north of Galway City.
